Crowns of Amsterdam

This year, a historic event will take place in Amsterdam. The Dutch Queen Beatrix decided to give her crown to her oldest son – Prince Willem Alexander. The coronation day is planned on 30th of April 2013. It will be a media spectacle! OK, maybe it will not be like the British Royal Wedding but definitely one of a kind. The Dutch are less exuberant when celebrating their Royal events because they prefer to have fun and drink beer during the annual Queen’s day celebration rather than talk about the opulence of the bold and the beautiful. The kingdom of The Netherlands is only 200 years old. Nevertheless, for the design enthusiasts there is plenty to see in the Dutch capital.

Hotel The Exchange | Stock – fresh coffee & sandwiches

Hotel The Exchange is one of the design hotels in Amsterdam. It has 61 rooms, ranging from 1 to 5 stars. The rooms are inspring spaces in which fashion, interior design and architecture form a playful combination. Together with OPTIONS! and Stock, the hotel forms a major design destination in central Amsterdam. Stock café serves an all-day breakfast and hearty, locally made snacks. Hotel was launched in 2011; the trio is located in interconnected buildings on the Damrak, one of the busiest and oldest streets in the city. The concept is by Suzanne Oxenaar and Otto Nan, initiators of the Lloyd Hotel & Cultural Embassy in Amsterdam and the Llove Hotel in Tokyo. They commissioned students from the Amsterdam Fashion Institute to create rooms using the theme “Rooms Dressed as Models”, which has made all 61 rooms completely unique. Studio INA MATT is responsible for the communal spaces, Stock restaurant and OPTIONS! store.

Options! – design store

OPTIONS! is a contemporary department store located in central Amsterdam. This is the mecca of design things and handmade goods for design lovers from all over the world.

The store has an extensive collection, ranging from small design gifts, stationery, ceramics, furniture, clothing and magazines to bespoke products from upcoming and established international interior and fashion designers.

Hôtel Droog and gallery

Hôtel Droog is a place where you can come for a drink, a bite to eat, exclusive high-end design shopping, many different exhibitions and lectures, or even for a good night’s sleep. In one big space you will find the legendary Droog Store, Gallery, Dining Room, Fairy Tale Garden, Beauty at Cosmania, Fashion at Kabinet, Products at Weltevree, and the one and only Bedroom, Hôtel Droog – all housed in 700 square metres in a 17th century building.

Pakhuis De Zwijger

My personal favourite place in Amsterdam is the old dock warehouse – Pakhuis De Zwijger. In today’s busy Amsterdam there is a great need for new kinds of meeting places for creativity and innovation. Places where you can exchange your thoughts and learn something new and inspiring. Places where you can meet new people from other parts of the world, but with the same mentality. Pakhuis De Zwijger is such a new place in the city, built in 1834 and re-opened in 2006. I remember when in 2005 I was there at the party to celebrate the Dutch Design Awards ceremony. From that moment on, to me it was the creative centre of Amsterdam. Every day, there are  interesting conferences, workshops, and meetings all of which interfacing with “creativity and innovation”. On warm summer days, you can sit outside nearby the water, and enjoy some good food and drink.
