IAA 2013: God is in the detail

When the legendary German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe coined the now famous phrase ‘God is in the Details’, he encouraged his audience to live and work in a thorough manner and to take note of details, no matter how small they might be. Rohe’s words are just as resonant today with designers all over the world, working across all manner of disciplines. However, while detail matters, much of it we barely notice – even in the context of a huge international car fair they are intended to be observed up close. The most striking details at this year’s IAA were perforated structures that give materials visual lightness and add better function and stability to the construction.
