IAA 2013: Future cities’ streets

The 65thedition of the International Car Show in Frankfurt a/M was not so rich in fancy concept gadget cars, but it gave a sneak preview of our streets in the future cities. Already today our cities are becoming too small for our daily transportation needs. In the future, 74% of the world’s population will live in urban zones, which makes transportation (together with food and health) one of the biggest challenges in the second half of the 21st century and beyond.

One thing we know for sure is that we will not give up our cars. But the future car will be electric. The fossil fuel era is nearing its end. The new sources of energy are growing every year and many countries already invest in new technology and energy innovation. This means that the landscape of our streets will feature a new street element – the electric car charger.

Volvo Cars introduces the Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid – and launches the car together with the “Pure Tension pavilion”. The pavilion – a spectacular free-standing tensioned membrane structure – is a rapidly deployable and portable solar charging station for the world-first Diesel Plug-in Hybrid. “Pure Tension pavilion” is the winning project resulting from a competition for architects and designers held in May and commissioned by Volvo Car Italia. The Pure Tension charging station together with the V60 Plug-in Hybrid will now be part of a road-show through Italy’s biggest cities.
