Ambiente 2014: My first garden

Today’s modern cities are risking overpopulation and food aid emergencies. If trends in growing urbanisations continue at their current rates, cities could evolve into places where great numbers of people may have to live well below the poverty limit. Food and drinking water would be even scarcer than in many of today’s developing agglomerations.

Fortunately, most of the new urban metropolises are experiencing a rebirth of their direct connection to farming. Within the past 5 years, the interest in urban agriculture has been increased through the creation of locally sourced movements and bottom-down initiatives.

Ambiente in a very modest way showed the urban farming issue as an ongoing transformation in our daily lives. We should not teach our kids how to build sandcastles but how to grow their own carrots or strawberries. It is already very abstract for kids to even realise what the source of milk is. Having your own backyard, balcony or garden full of edible veggies and fruits instead of fancy oriental plants will be a new luxury for tomorrow’s city dwellers.
